FAO my murderer - why?

Postby footwo » Tue Jul 06, 2010 4:42 pm

My character Darc was killed today and I'd like to know why/who.

A runestone was left near my claim stating ""Tonight I have ended a life but spared a village. Be wary of your scents oh hearthlings."

Whilst I accept this is all part of the game and I'm not deterred from playing I would request that my murderer step forward and explain why I was killed. I assume it want a random attack by virtue of the note you left and the fact that the claim was untouched but I would like to know how exactly I left a scent?

I hadn't trespassed on any claimed land or hurt/killed anyone. I don't even know how to do that :)

Anything I stole was from unclaimed land which is as I understand it, not a crime.

Yet somehow I left a scent, so for future reference I would like to know what I did to leave this scent by which you tracked me down.

*goes off to grind LP*

When you were killed while being offline you must have left a scent. There is no other option to kill hearthlings in their sleep.
Scents can only be left while comitting a crime and to commit a crime you have to have criminal acts turned on. Plus you need at least one black skill where the according actions leave a summonable scent. Trespassing is not one of them.

So let me ask you: Have you murdered or KO'ed someone? Have you vandalized on a foreign claim or have you stolen something? If not this all is very strange...

I can honestly say no to all the above. I wouldn't even know where to begin attacking other players, in fact I have only actually met one other person in the whole game for the 2 weeks I've been playing.

Any time I have come across claimed land I have been blocked by the red border and not able to walk on it, I don't have any trespassing skill.

I didn't even know about criminal actions until the other day and I think I have a theory as to what happened.

I was laying a path from my claim to my logging grounds in the forest. There was a hearthfire that actually belonged to my alt in the way of where I was building so I wanted to get rid of it. I looked at the wiki and learned that I had to switch on criminal actions and then destroy the hearthfire (it didn't occur to me to just move it with the alt :/). I did that and tried to destroy the hearthfire but had to give up because I didn't have the stamina so I just built around it instead.

Is this what left my scent?

Yes, destroying hearthfires leaves vandalism scents.

What about your own hearthfire? No right?

Man. That's horrible.

All the mislead vigilantes tracking scents they know nothing of is starting to bug me.

If any of them came into my village we'd probably all be dead as we've had to kill a few people that guessed hearthsecrets, a couple of intruders have been killed, unwanted alts, basically all sorts of crime that weren't really crimes.

This situation in particular really bugs me. In the Nazi thread that showed up a few weeks ago it was some idiot trying to have fun, basically just your average run of the mill griefer. In this situation someone was truly trying to do good based on the stone they left behind. They tracked a random scent they found while wondering and decided to act on it.

Not all scents are crimes. Not all scents need tracked. If you are in no way connected to a scent, keep it that way. Don't try to force justice of those who are doing what is just or just going about their daily life.

Well if there was a vandalism scent on unclaimed land with no buildings around the guy enforcing "justice" and thinking he was punishing some serious crime clearly isn't too bright...

Yeah so essentially I was killed because I attempted (didn't even succeed) to remove something that I owned.

Some random found the scent of that and decided to enact their own brand of justice not even stopping to consider that it had nothing to do with him/her. Awesome!

Ah well, I'm not mad, I accept the mechanics of the game work like this and that there are griefers in every MMO. I just wish they would have used a bit more common sense. The message they left now offends me somewhat as it is as if they were trying to secure a victory for justice whilst showing leniency towards my claim. Turns out it was just some douche who wanted to kill someone just because they could.

also it now appears that someone is sleeping in my bed...I cant get back into it. Is this a known bug because I was in bed when I was summoned and murdered?
