I've been thinking about the boringness of the square grid design, and here's what I came up with:

I think that the sketch is self-explanatory, but ask if there's anything unclear.
Anyway, I figure that things can be spiced up a bit by moving some of the personal plots a bit off the square grid. The plots no longer tessellate, but the extra space between them can be used for public trees and decorative flowerbeds. Since these don't have to be claimed, curved lines can be used for aesthetic purposes. If need arises, though, a fair deal of the tree area can be claimed. Authority objects would look well on intersections, but I'm not sure if they can fit there efficiently.
The inner wall is optional, but I'd keep it since it adds an extra bit of security and saves some iron on the walls of the inner personal plots (build whole wall, then punch a hole with a ram for a gate). Crossroads for getting outside of it, idol port for getting inside. I guess you could also keep the gates open if you're feeling extra safe. Majority of personal walls can be extended from village walls, but 8 of them have to be started from scratch. Such is the prize of beauty, I guess. Note that trees are never next to outer walls, to give a better view of the outside in case you're not using the client with transparency.
With 24 personal plots, this is a medium village. The size is roughly the same as Sodom, but it's a bit less efficient. I still think it's efficient enough, though, and it looks better.
