Merchants robes boost Charisma (and intelligence) and this increase is affected by the quality of the robe.
This boon is useful for Law Speakers, Chiefs, and setting a "tidy" table for feasting. [edit: oops, ignore that last part. Thanks Potjeh!)

Anyway, yeah - CHA is useful for bonfire lighters as well and is useful to any person feasting by the said bonfire iirc.

So I guess if you got a really good merchant's robe, you'd get a bit more for it, but not much. You'd be better off selling the silk threads/cloths separately.

high ql silk is probably best for , high ql Tablecloths, high ql Rangerbows, etc so selling the high ql silkcloth seperatley as they are is probably the best idea and will probably give you a better price,
Most people dont really care about the ql of the merchant robe in all honesty so i guess use the lower/medium qualitys for the robes is probably recomended.

I once sold a top ql merchant robe for 2 bars of gold, so some people value them. This was shortly after the village authority change though, when people were scrambling for int and cha buffs to grind those auth points.
