look at it this way:
If we give 1 tin for 1 copper, they get 3 bars of bronze while we still don't even have one.
1 tin for 2 copper and we get 3 bronze, they get 3 bronze

look at it this way:
If we give 1 tin for 1 copper, they get 3 bars of bronze while we still don't even have one.
1 tin for 2 copper and we get 3 bronze, they get 3 bronze

So let me get this straight; supply is equal in terms of tin and copper for the most part, as there are likely roughly equal numbers of copper and tin mines. Now, to make bronze you need 2 copper and 1 tin, so you need more copper than tin. So now copper is more scarce and thus more valuable since you need twice as much of it to get the end product, thus there is twice the demand. Yet you're charging twice as much copper for tin, assuming to devaluate the copper to half the value of tin, which is less scarce and meets less demand.

With that rant out of the way, I'll make the offer of a 1 for 1 ore exchange but you're likely to not accept it. I wish you luck in getting the trade you want.

what's all this business about copper supply, has anyone actually ever depleted a copper mine?

still, the ore exchange seems like a better idea, since then the difference in qualities is a non issue, for example what if you are making q50 tin and they are only making q20 copper

It's an equal quantity exchange and thus equal value. No major trading city has valued Tin, Copper, Bronze, or Iron at different prices as they are all common metals. Otherwise it makes no sense for me not to just pick up a tin mine, double my quantity of bars trading with some sucker with a copper mine, then sell them to a major city for twice the value of my tin.
