Get foraging, and then raise your exploration. You should be able to find spindley taproot, chantrelles and blueberries. The higher your exploration and/or perception the more you will find.

If you find a grassland of any sort (grass green, yellow or pink terrain) you might be able to find chickens and they come in flocks, not just single animals as rabbits do.

Use a rabbit bone fishhook and a spindley taproot fishing line and some kind of a lure with your fishing rod, if you see fish jumping out of the water. That indicates a fishing spot and makes it worth getting the skill fishing. If you have a leech marsh you can use leeches for bait and to heal yourself from the bear but be very careful the leeches don't suck all your soft hit points and cost you hard hit points.

And if truly desperate and willing to cheat, use travel if necessary to get back to your hearth fire, create a hearth secret, log out, create a new character, have him/her tell your hearth secret to Mr. Holmes in the character creation room and bring you five loaves of bread.

Look for the yellowish grasslands. Thats usually where you can find herds of chickens. If you get really desperate get foraging skill and eat some of the roots you find on the ground.
