but i think the actualy problam here, is that the map is EXTREAMLY little.

try downloading Enders client,( viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14575 )

its a front end for easier play, you can use it to zoom out the mini map, and can see things like bears and boars before they kill you,

besides that, find a place away from rivers and lakes, and you will be less likely to die from players, discover yeomanry and build a big palisade, and claim.

There are key principals in this game we call Haven and Hearth which you need to accept will never change. PvP and Permadeath being 2 of them.
