Should I get the skill "Swimming"? No! Swimming is broken and/or unreasonably insane and chances are you will end up killing your character in the water if you do get it.
What is a Macroer? They use bots that automatically do things for them while they aren't even at the computer.
What is a griever/griefer? They're basically similar to macroers but instead of using a bot to exploit the game, they use in-game mechanics to exploit the game.
What is Quality or "Q"? The better the "Q/Quality" the better the materials you can make with them.
How Do I chop trees? You make an axe with stone and branches. Should be able to move your mouse over the different things you can do at the bottom-right and one will pop up saying "Craft". Then you get the skill, lumberjacking. Then look for the Tools button which should be fairly easy to spot. Then look for the stone axe and click it. There it'll tell you how to make an axe. I mentioned the supplies required above.
How do I get seeds? Generally you look for WWW's that in my opinion. They look like little feathers. You need generally at least 15 exploring to find them fairly commonly. You can pick them by right-clicking on them and clicking the only option provided to you by doing so. You can hang them on Drying Frames and/or herbalist tables. Herbalist Tables are generally better as it takes a LOT less time for them to dry and turn into seeds then. In fact in Herbalist tables it'll take hours as opposed to a Drying frame where it'll take I believe it was over a day long.
What seeds are implemented in the game already? Carrot, Tea, Hemp, Flax, Wheat, Tobacco, Onion, and PeaPods. I'm sure I forgot to mention at least a few. these are the one's that I could remember off the top of my head.
How do I get higher Q water/clay/sand? This is area-based. Certain areas have high Q's while others do not. Generally the more you use up a certain area the Q will lower but eventually go back up again if you wait long enough.
How do I farm? Well, this is simple. Make a plow. Plow a plot. Click the seed and drop it there. by left clicking the seed and right-clicking the plowed spot you want to plant the seed at. Depending on the seed it can take anywhere from 1-2 IRL days. Or something like that.
How do I make a mine? Prospecting skill and Rustroot Extract. I'll add more details to this later.
How do I protect my village?
-Make sure you build a solid village structure. What I mean by this is making sure you recruit the right types of villagers. Sometimes they have alterior motives while others simply might be dedicated to the point of getting on maybe one hour a week. Obviously that'll put major strain on your village.
-Build it in an Isolated area. This way Raiders whether they be actual players with true non-exploited combat skills or Macroers won't be able to find your base as easy. What I mean by an "Isolated area" is an area not anywhere near any sort of water. The further away you are from water, the better. Preferably a spot not being able to be seen from the boat they're in.
-Get your combat skills up. Although they're pointless when you're fighting macroers you will definitely benefit by getting them up. Combat Skills like INT/STR are very important as well as others depending on which combat skills you decide to use.
-Find mines or trade for valuable metals to get better equipment. This is a VERY important aspect to protecting your village. You can significantly boost the damage you do by the equips you wear. Not only that but you can protect yourself about 1000x better.
-Building palisade or a brick wall. Obviously surrounding your base with walls is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself against various raiders. Make sure also to LOCK your cornerposts. Otherwise people will grief you. See my definition of a griefer below.
Most Effective Ways to get LP
-Most people seem to agree that obtaining the "Pottery" skill is the best source for getting beginning LP as a total beginner.
-Bucket-making in my opinion is the 2nd best way to get LP for beginners or "nomads".
Feel free to add your own to help people out. I'll be slowly adding to this as time goes on & I have the spare minute to do so.
I agree with all the previous posts that say that this guide is useless and does more harm then good and if its a work in progress it definitely shouldn't have been posted this early in it's "progress". But if these thread isn't going to be deleted/moved, I might as well point out some of the more serious errors to help make a little less damaging to new players.
1. Grievers don't just abuse ingame mechanics to exploit the game, they use ingame mechanics to abuse/grieve (hence why they are called grievers) other players. This includes things such as needlessly clear-cutting peoples forests, walling people in, destroying containers and leaving the stuff inside to decay, and many other acts that will not benefit the griever at all (or very little) but will instead needlessly damage the player being grieved.
2. You said what quality does, not what quality is. Use examples of formulas of making items that are known to help show the effect of quality instead of just saying better quality means better items. That means very little to an inexperienced player. I would also recommend trying to summarize the information that the wiki page has as it seems to cover it very well.
http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Quality3. You explanation of how to chop down a tree is absolutely terrible, I don't even know how to start to fix it so I'll just re-write that section for you. How to cut down a tree: To cut down a tree one needs the skill lumberjacking. To learn the skill lumberjacking you need 200 LP (short for Learning-Points). You gain learning points from basically any task you do such as collecting branches or building fires (for more info see The How To's of LP section). Once you have lumberjacking (you need to cover how to learn skills in another section) you need to craft a stone axe. To do so look in the bottom right corner of your screen and you should see a 4 by 4 grid. There should be four buttons on the top row of that grid and if you hover your mouse over each one it should put up with the label of what that menu contains. Look for the one labeled Craft, which should be the farthest to the right, and click on it. The 4 by 4 grid should change to contain different buttons. Now look for the one that says tools and click on that. It, once again, should change the 4x4 grid. Now look for the button labeled stone axe and click it (alternatively one could press the C key, then the T key, then the X key on the keyboard to navigate through those menu's). Now in the lower middle section where the text box normal it is a crafting window should appear. It tells you that you need to
Input a branch and a stone to
Result in a stone axe. To obtain a branch you need to find a tree, right click it, and then left click the Take Branch button. To obtain a stone you need to find a stone boulder (link the picture on the wiki
http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Stone_Boulder) right click on it and left click the button that says Chip Stone. After having both your branch and your stone click the craft button in the stone axe crafting screen that we brought up previously. Now that you have your stone ax equip it. Now onto the fun part, cutting the tree. Find any tree and right click it. A button that says chop should appear, left click it and you will begin to cut down the tree. A bar will pop up and once the bar is filled completely, the tree will be chopped down resulting in a stomp, 1-3 logs, and a bit of LP. Congratulations on your first lumberjacking experience. /end section As you can see I went quite in depth with my explanation of a simple concept, but its better to have too much information and have the reader absolutely sure about what they are doing then to have to little and make the reader still needing to ask for help.
4. This section is pretty bad too. This is another section that needs completely rewrite though I will not do it this time. Contain lots of information that, although it might seem tedious and unnecessary to us, will accurately and completely tell the reader what they need to know.
5. You closing statement is a huge no-no. If you are righting a guide trying to inform players you better be damn sure about you information and a statement like "Or something like that" is a massive mistake as it will make your reader feel like they are learning from an idiot (which in your case might be true). Also, in this section although you do describe every step you take you should add details into what each step is doing such as. "Left click the seed in your inventory to pick it up, then right click the plowed spot to plant it. Many items can interact with other items, or the environment by picking them up and right clicking on other things." Statements like the one I made in the last sentence are also useful to help the players understand the game better.
6. Atleast link the wiki page about mining instead of just saying 4 words about the topic as that doesn't really help anyone.
7. Like stated previously Avu's guide on village defense should be used with his permission.
8. Don't just say the methods for LP making, no new player will have any clue what you are talking about, explain how you do it. You just say get pottery to get LP. What do you need the pottery skill to do? How do you use it? How much LP do you think you can get from it?
All in all its a terrible guide, make a lot of changes (and I mean a ton) and it might be helpful. If this post is going to be here you absolutely need to make some changes soon so it doesn't screw over new players too bad.
