Adding Shallow Water "bridges" on rivers

Since Rivers are Large masses of deep water that you can't avoid:
Wouldn't it be reasonable to add some shallow water areas connecting the shores, allowing both hearthlings and boats to pass, but stopping wagons and carts from crossing them?
