As far as most of the internet is concerned, an image macro is an image which either implies or has text relating to a generally offensive term. Examples include but are not limited to: Come at me bro, U Mad, lolwut, butthurt, and GAY.

An image =/= a macro. The exact evolution of the term is something that escapes even me but that's a clear definition of the term.

Image macros don't have to be offensive. ORLY was an image macro, there are plenty of In Before The Lock macros, etc.
