Well, we usually let a lot of insults go. However I am kinda with you when it comes to the word faggot. Being gay should really not be used as an insult anymore nowadays. In fact it never should have been.

Anyone who thinks it is appropriate to use a sexual preference as an insult is an idiot and it would suit us all well to not do that.

I saw that episode, yes. You probably shouldn't take your knowledge from Southpark. Just because something sounds witty does not make it true. The roots of that word are pretty obvious and still the underlying implication is that calling someone gay is to be understood as an insult.

I mean I am obviously not a native speaker, but I think my knowledge of the use of this word and the english language is good enough to come to this conclusions. Also, it is pretty similar in German. There is a term that is congruent to "fag" and of course it will always leave a bad taste. Just like calling someone a pig or an asshole. That obviously doesn't imply they are literally an animal or the human anus...nontheless the connection is pretty easy to be made.

Language changes.

For instance, for a long time saying "Ni" in Swedish was considered to be the proper way to say "You" to address to strangers. Since around the middle of the 20th century, it was rude to use "Ni" and instead the proper manner was to use "Du".

Faggot/Fag has been a derogatory terminology for homosexual males, but that doesn't mean that it has to stay that way forever. You may not like how it changed, but for me and other people the intent is the most important aspect and therefore we are able to accept the insult "fag/faggot":
