Community Hearth Fire

Postby Dwarfu » Tue Jun 02, 2009 7:24 pm

I'm sure this would come more into play when the details of actual settlements get coded in, but it would be nice to have a community hearth fire where everyone associated with that community can claim it as a hearth fire. That way the landscape would be saved from every single person in a tight area having to build their own single fire. Perhaps it should require the work of multiple people (like 3 people or so must designate the construction site as a community site), and it can even be expandable to hold 'slots' so that as the local population increases, so does the resources required to upgrade the community hearth fire.

Some good ideas here. We've considered similar things in the past. Something along these lines might happen.

I like the idea of a big green flamed bonfire in the middle of a village that lights the whole place up that everyone spawns from. I would suspect it needs a bunch of logs and several dreams or some other form of hearth magic.

I think -- and I know Im getting WAY ahead of myself here --
That there should be some kind of meta-player entity progression. People can pay x dreams and what not to build the heart of it, and then others can join. When a certain threshold is passed, they all become a "Tribe" and gain a communal hearthfire. When another threshold is passed, they become a "Clan" and gain an automatic clan chat channel -- kinda like the party chat channel. Maybe this could tie in with yeomanry somehow. The progression could go up all the way to "Nation" or "Empire"
There could also be some kind of Meta-entity tech tree, with members able to add in their LP to the Entity, which would allow them to unlock different abilities...

The threshold would obviously be partly based on membership, but it would be neat if amount of land controlled (Via yeomanry) also had an effect.

That is all I have to say about communal hearthfires. Thank you for listening.

I agree with the communal hearthfire and group chat channels as those are sensible group-only features. What kind of abilities did you have in mind, though? I would support abilities that offer a (useful, but subtle) boost to activities within the village, but I'm strongly against ones that would have a direct effect on activities outside of the village.

Maybe the ability to specialise the village, to make learning certain skills cheaper and others more expensive, or to allow them access to certain trade paths whilst other villages don't have them.

I think you will find that our final plans for villages/nations are far grander than you are imagining at the moment. :)

It's just pending a lot of underlying infrastructure and intermediate game content.
