Scent of Theft if they take something. The wagon may have theft scents leading to it, so they may be ditching it on you to get you killed.

No, you'd have to collect the scents of theft from where it was stolen. It's impossible to know if an item is trackable or not.

When riding on a wagon scents aren't left if you cross a claim, it works like boats really. Unless they have changed it since W3.

My advice, stay away from that place and if your settlment is close by, get some palisades up at least.

Cheers.
I had a retardedly huge signature and have gotten this embarrassing replacement to show for it.

Pretty much this.

As for the wagons leaving scents, I'm not sure -- never tried it myself. You're probably right which just means they were going over his land too.

Wagons are like boats. They don't leave trespassing scents on a claim.

The way theft scents work is, they are created on the ground at the spot the person was standing when they stole. So no, you wouldn't see theft scents on the stolen items themselves.

Rangers can use the theft scents to track a) the perp b) the perp's HF or c) the stolen item itself.

So what people are saying is it's possible the wagon and/or the items inside are stolen items that are being dumped on you, perhaps to frame you.

My guess is they wandered onto the claim with the cart, stopped pulling it (likely to try to steal something), but didn't have the theft skill, so couldn't pull it again (as interacting with objects on a claim requires theft).

If you want to be diplomatic, bring it back to them. Then go home and build a pallisade around your claim before they get theirs up (it looks as though they are well on their way)
I find your lack of face disturbing...
