Step One: Have combat skills and decent armor
Step Two: Get a boat and a friend
Step Three: Build a palisade and have a small area squared off for the purposes of storing people.
Step Four: Lurk near water and wait for someone with newbie-looking equipment to approach and leave his boat for some reason. Leaving a chest out in the open can expedite this process.
Step Five: Pop out of the woods and initiate combat so he can't Travel back to his Hearth Fire. Your friend should go straight for the boat that the newbie-looking guy brought with him so he can't escape.
Step Six: Tell him that you will kill him if he logs off, runs away, or anything that isn't getting in the boat with your friend so you can go for a ride.
Step Seven: Take the newbie straight to your storage area, which should have a crate with five sticks and a Beautiful Dream.
Step Eight: Tell him to build a Hearth Fire in the palisaded area or you will kill him.
Step Nine: Lock him inside and explain that he will now be working for the Glorious Army of Whateverthefuckistan.

You might have to take a few attempts at this, because some newbies are actually alts of experienced players who don't particularly care whether said alt dies or not. You might also lose your potential slave to your friend being semi-retarded and leaving his boat unguarded for a few precious seconds during Step Seven, which is what happened to me and why I managed to escape the clutches of a pair of slavers myself.

But how do I make sure that they never get the tools or skills to destroy their HF, quit the character after the initial work, all the while giving some semblance of free reign?

There really should be some kind of slavery thread/discussion (no idea where it should go or if it should even be public) because if people are seriously capturing people and forcing them to do work as slaves in this fucking java based video game, I want to know all the nuances and tricks.

If people are actually consistently holding people hostage for long periods of time to do forced labor in a game sans roleplaying, that is some curraaazzyyy shit.

Again, I don't know how they planned to do any of that. I managed to escape through luck alone. As for nuances of it, I'm not entirely sure I like the idea of evading capture by slavers every thirty minutes while I'm on my way through the world, so I don't think I'll help out on this one.

If you'd like to do this slavery thing, I suggest doing a little critical thinking on how to solve the very valid concerns you present. In time, I'm sure you'll find the answers you seek.

Then presumably a pair of slavers are going to get murdered in a horribly grand fashion and their skeletons will be added to the aforementioned noob-looking person's macabre collection.

Wait till your slavers are offline, destroy your hearthfire, port to village or log out then log in somewhere in the wilderness.

So...how do you keep slaves again? Oh right, you keep noobs and/or incompetents - people which actually stand to learn something from the ordeal, so you might argue that the slavers are actually teachers, doing community work by weeding out retards from people who can rub 2 brain cells together.

Slavers can forces the enslaved to leave scents, making it possible to track them, force summon and kill them while they're offline. Or just summon and kill if they didn't re-build the HF.
