a few steel/wrought just takes a day or two to recover.

Steel takes 56 hours, two days is 48 hours.

Thus, it takes 2 and a half days, that's more than two days.

The thing is, if they're really the type of players you claim then all you're doing is giving them what they want. Those type of players will be continuing to act superior when they're living out of a single walled off storage shack in the next supergrid, claiming you've taken nothing of value to them and they still have a dozen giant villages. No matter how hard you try, you're never going to make them feel like they're losing.

Take satisfaction in the fact that you feel you've accomplished something and stop worrying about how it effects them, because it won't effect them.
