"need fire" when standing next to one

I have some nice fresh rabbit meat and a campfire. When I want to craft roast meat, I get told that I need fire to cook the meat... while I'm standing pretty much on top of a fire!

Do I need something else?

Right click the fire.

I've noticed that right-clicking on the fire right after you've lit it, i.e. not moving in between, doesn't work.
