You can farm, hunt, build, fish, pot(do pottery)
wander about aimlessly
its really up to you

Though I can't answer that question with any degree of success or clarity, I have noted a few bad things to do in this game, especially for new players.

1) Join expecting to only do one thing Ever.
Reason) For one, it's boring and will dissuade you from the game. Two, it's hard to do only one thing as this means you're retardedly incapable at other vital aspects. Three, it's a pain in the ass when you eat through your villages entire leather storage because you only want to grind leatherworking and hurts everyone. Finally, because then you're a huge parasite otherwise. You will eat everyone's food, take their stuff, and have minimal utility to offer in exchange. A good metal worker is nice but there is a finite amount of metal working that needs to be done until quality rises and quality rises are few and far between. So be a generalist at least a bit and save the hyper-specialists for your alts.

2) Join the game to grind
Reason) Wow this is unfun as all fuck and you won't even be useful in exchange for the grinding. Most of the time, actual knowledge and quality softcap you in terms of stats and skills anyway, so grinding to be really good really fast get you absolutely nowhere. Hey, spent the first two weeks running macros so you could have 120 Marksmanship? Congrats! Your q6 bow lets you utilize exactly 10% of that. Oh hey, 100 Smithing and Sewing, bet you wish you had metal and linens along with the clay and wood necessary to utilize them.

3) Claim HUGE tracts of land and expect to farm all of it.
Reason) Even with a scythe, you're looking at about 5 seconds per plot -- without one you're just a glutton for pain. Now, maybe a 25x25 plot of land doesn't sound so bad but that's still 625 tiles. That's just over 52 minutes to harvest it and probably close to 20 minutes to plant it and collect everything. This is assuming you don't ever need to stop for any reason, such as your inventory being full of bursting seedbags. I don't know about you but sitting there harvesting and organizing seeds for 3 hours isn't my cup of tea. This is assuming you only take 25x25 too. I have seen lots of abandoned farms and frustrated players with plots upwards of 50x60 plots. That's 3000+ plots of land. You will kill yourself after 2 days of harvesting this crap.

4) Expect to be instantly perfect at things.
Reason) Not sure why but newly recruited players always seem to expect this. I will be the cities X and no one else better do it because it's my job. I may have 2 points in the skill, 10 dex, and no materials but it's my job and my job alone! This is just stupid. Don't do it.

One of the more fun aspects that players seem to forget about is exploration, trade, and communication. Find the resources around you, find your neighbors, and trade with them. Establishing profit and growth are rewarding ventures that often take just enough work to give you a great sense of accomplishment. They're also great for you and your village. Just don't be careless about it (Hurr, hiyas neighbors, you look nice have keys to my house!) and it's almost always a good thing to do =)

then i suggest you grind lp and get your marksmanship to a decent level and try to get a decent sling. seriously dude, hunting mouflon/auroch is the best way to get lp hands down if you cant kill level x boars and bears yet. i can now kill a mouflon in 2 hits and they give me 720lp each, they spawn in herds way over 10+ and thats 7200 in about 10-15min. the auroch are 1080lp each for me but they take a lot more hits. i usually stay away from them if i cant find mouflon herds.
