On Valor and Ranging.

Postby Thursday » Wed Aug 05, 2009 1:50 pm

For personal enlightenment, and the sharing of information through the wiki and by word of mouth...

What do Valor and Ranging do EXACTLY.

I know Ranging allows you to find and track criminals (through scents), and that the success rate is determined by Perception and Exploration, but not exactly how the skill and stat values add up.

I have no idea what Valor does, other than allow you to learn Ranging.

Also, am I correct in assuming that a Ranger without PVP skills can track criminals, but not punish them?

I think what you know about Ranging amounts to what everybody knows about Ranging. The only missing bit is that it seems like there's always a (relatively miniscule) chance for anyone to see a clue, and that it re-rolls every time you go on a screen. So theoretically a very high-stealth character could be found out by a 10 PER 1 Exploration newbie, but the clue would 'disappear' (go back into hiding, technically) once said newbie reloaded the area.

Valor is pretty much a Pre-requisite for Ranging, and I think it gives you the ability to use the Valorous Strike combat technique.

Pretty sure you're spot-on about the last question. The best you could do (and maybe not even that) is Force Summon him and leer at him angrily.

Ranging also allows you to make allot of high quality gear.

If I could get more data on how the summon works, that would be useful. I understand scents lead to their Hearthfire?

Then, you can use the scent to summon them to their fire (or the Ring if they don't have one), even if they're offline, and do as you please?

If you have a Theft, Battery (i.e. you KO someone), or Murder (i.e. actually kill) scent, you can right-click a perp's hearthfire with the scent and Force Summon him. He'll be brought online, in combat mode with your character. You drop an Assault Scent when you do this (even if you have Criminal Acts off, last I checked - quite possible it has been fixed now). You may then have your way with him. If the perp has no hearthfire, the Ring of Brodgar is fine too.

Force Summon does work even if they're logged out, yes. And it bears mentioning that if they are logged in, then it doesn't work. You'll have to track the perp himself. Which can occasionally lead to some 'fun' (read: annoying) running around.

I assume Vandalism is also an appropriate clue, too, but I'm not sure of that.

If you summon someone, and just let them stand there until they starve, could you kill them without the murder skill and/or leaving clues?

Does stamina only go down in combat when you're attacking?

Well, I'm pretty sure they only stay on as long as they're aggroed. Stamina only goes down if they do something, which in the force-summoned state amounts to staring dumbly off into space while you butcher them like a cow. Theoretically, I suppose one could rough them up, let their SHP regen (using up some of their hunger), and repeat. But it'd probably take a fairly damn long time, to the point where they might well log in.

I have no idea if that'd leave a clue or not (better ask loftar - and he'll probably deal with that edge case if he hasn't already.) In any case you would leave an Assault clue from the force summoning itself.

In fact, it wouldn't work at all -- below 75% total hunger, characters stop healing, so it couldn't take more hunger than that. (It might be worthy of mention here, if I haven't said it elsewhere, that stamina also regenerates more slowly the more hungry a player is, although it never stops regenerating completely, as with SHP healing)

It seemed like a real long shot, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
