Cave ins

Postby Mhi200 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:36 am

Can someone tell me or direct me to where I could find out the following about cave-ins(Searched wiki/forum, nothing):

What sort of chances do they have of occurring/when?
What sort of damage do they do?
Are they able to be dodged?

Not sure exactly what the chances are, but if you try not to dig too many tiles out in too small an area you ought to be fine.

As for the other questions, they seem to do between 50 and 100 damage per stone that hits you. However the pattern in which they fall is random. I've been in three cave ins so far and only one of the three actually hit me. They come down instantly upon causing the cave in, but you can luck out and not be hit.

The rule of thumb my group has been using is to not have more than three continuous tiles mined out. Whether that actually means no caveins or not I dunno.

I got hit by 288 other day. Obviously, 288 was my MHP.

Yeah but I believe that's because you got hit multiple times. That happened to another person on here, apparently he got hit for several hundred total damage, and Loftar said that they shouldn't be able to hit that high, and it must have overlapped. I can't be certain either way, but I've only seen 50 and 100s. Although our rock is soft too. Perhaps harder rocks do more damage with cave ins.

No, not if you're mining the way you should be. They're possible, if not likely, if you only mine out a tile or two at a time along the walls.

What is the "proper mining technique?"

So supports reduce, but not remove the chance of cave ins? Is that all?

No, what I am saying by mining properly, is actually staying within the area of the support. The thing is the game works in tiles, and the area of influence of the supports shows as a circle. There are several tiles along that circle that are partially covered, and they can cause cave ins. People mine them out, get a chain of failures, die, then think that the supports aren't a guarantee.

I never ever mine a tile that's not entirely covered by part of the circle. In fact I rarely ever mine anything until another post is up. I dig out the 8 spaces from one support to the next, build the next post, then widen that line out. This way I'm never too close to the edges, because in the end those edges will be covered by a later support anyways, so why risk it?
