You can probably just ask your neighbors for a few seeds and they'll be more than happy to oblige. Certain seeds are rare to find in some regions so you might have to just explore really far out to get ahold of flax.

The outcome of www is dependant on where on the map you picked them. That doesn't mean terrain influences them, but every 100x100 tiles the random distribution of seeds you can find changes. So just explore more of the map to find crops you still haven't aquired.

i have gone abroad and looked around, but most of the villages are either abandoned or unsocialable

Other than for decoration, you're better off with hemp rather than Flax.

Since hemp gives you plant fibres and more. Flax is just... blue.
