Bed. And deaths related to sleep.

Could one kill a helpless little Hearthling whilst he sleeps and without any criminal scents that belong to the above mentioned "Hearthling"?
I'm just being paranoid about getting during contemplation of my beautiful dreams, you see. And paranoia makes my beautiful dreams a lot less beautiful.
I don't like that. Not that I like getting killed either.

So, beds here are impenetrable fortresses, I see? That is reassuring.
I'd love real life to be so safe.

Offline characters do not exist in the game world and are untouchable (unless engaged in combat at the time of logout or summoned by criminal acts).

Just because there's a little picture of a dude in your bed when you go to sleep doesn't mean that you're actually there in your bed.

When you go to sleep in a bed, you are not actually there. Destroying the bed doesn't effect your character in the slightest. To kill you while you are offline, you must have commit Theft, Battery, Murder, or Vandalism and the person must have the scents from that crime and access to your hearthfire. If you don't have the skills to perform these actions, logging out is 100% safe for you and always will be.

I've never understood why something as simple as theft allows someone to summon anothers character and kill them just because something was stolen.

That's two questions. "why can you kill someone while they're offline" and "why does the game consider theft severe enough to qualify for summoning".

It is perfectly fair. And many times it's not "just something", but a whole village being robbed.

And if a village has a lot of stuff, but doesn't keep a frequent inventory, even one theft scent might not tell them what went missing. That'd suck if something incredibly hard to replace got jacked. I like what I proposed in Jackard's thread as an alternate option, but it has its flaws. I proposed imprisonment of the perpetrator, but if they're in a village who sanctioned it... that means WAR.
