If I use a plane to smoothen a board, the byproduct is called what? In Swedish you would say "hyvelspån", composite of "hyvel" (plane) and "spån" (?). The word "dust" comes to me because the corresponding Swedish word for "sawdust" would be "sågspån", composite of "såg" (saw) and "spån" (?).
"Spån" in Swedish is a generic word for a small piece of (primarily wood) byproduct from planing, sawing or filing. It can also be used as an invective describing a stupid person. What would you of the Northwest-German persuasion say?
