Best Way to mine

i was mining for the 1st time today and i almost died do to cave in. I was wanting to know what is the best way to mine with out getting killed by falling rocks? and can your armor affect how much damg you take from them?

Armor doesn't affect it. Mine out in a corkscrew (search for it) design and you'll avoid cave-ins.

Miners helmet will reduce the damage though.
