New Chicken Coop rules?

Postby gadien » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:52 am

I don't know why, but all the chickens in my 2 chicken coops are coming up quality 10 despite the feed quality and egg quality being above 15. Are there new rules that govern the chicken quality or is it a bug which will require me to build new coops?

Thanks in advance

Bad luck on your part. I got q10 chickens eating q24 fodder (blueberries ftw) and they're getting 7-14 quality eggs. Like with farming, it's +/- 5 on the average of their parents. Can be the same, just random chance.

The egg quality isn't my problem, its the final product.

I've had a pack of wild chickens in my 1st coop for a week with Q23 feed and they do not go up.

The only way to get high quality chickens is to hatch them yourself.

Put a rooster in the coop, and wait till the hens lay the eggs. Keep the high quality eggs in a separate coop until they hatch.

This will be your second generation of chickens.

Get rid of the old Q10 chickens and breed your new ones.

etc etc...

Eggs laid are the average of the hen and cock +/- 5 (Same as with crops, etc.) When the eggs hatch, the chicks will start at the same quality as the egg. If you have better quality fodder, everything is good and the chick will grow to an adult at the same Q. If you have lower quality fodder, the chicks quality will go down until it reaches the fodder level. Fodder can never raise animal quality. This is the same with pigs, sheep, and cows. As you get better quality adult animals, cull the flock and keep quality going up.

I've always just taken crappy eggs out and used them for food: boiled eggs for per, fried eggs (if you can get a frying pan) for con. Also: Carrots > blueberries.

Carrots require farming. We were given straw by someone else, and made a coop before we started doing carrots. A good scavenger can keep a whole coop alive on blueberries. Admittedly, anything you can grow is preferred over anything you have to go find.

Good point :) But then, I think taproots and chants work, too. I haven't tried nettles. It is easier to get better quality fodder early on from foraging than farming. My point was that it takes much less time to get enough carrots or even beetroot and leaves to keep your coop going and you don't need to use your good forageables, especially since it takes a good bit of time for chicken quality to start going up.

Nettles and spindlies cannot, I tried :P Not sure about chantrelles, I was too interested in the dex to try. We now have a good farm going though, so we're feeding beetroot leaves and carrots to everything.
