I saw people doing it just fine with ~30 con.

A good way of practicing is swimming parallel to the shoreline and counting the number of tiles you make it before getting to 20% stamina (that is around when i usually start to panic). Then, count the tiles across the river.

That is exceptionally excellent advice =)

Yeah, I don't get why so many people drown when swimming. I did the noob thing, took a plunge and saw three tiles into the river that my stamina was dropping like crazy. Turned around promptly. Haven't touched water since.

If it's just farther than you feel like you can safely cross, you can try this.

Get a bit of a head start. Usually far enough so that you can open the menu on a flask of some sort. You can't open a menu while you're swimming, so you need to do it before you get into the water. Start out to cross the river and open the menu on the flask or waterskin. (A skin might be better since it holds 3L of water.) As you cross and start getting low on stamina, you can start drinking. Timing can be critical depending on water quality (better water heals more stamina per tick) and your rate of stamina loss. If done right, you can cross a wider river successfully.

Disclaimer: Might want to practice a few times somewhere you feel safe crossing just to make sure you can do it. I take no responsibility for any deaths due to poor judgment, lag, or any fixes to anything that might be perceived as a bug. This was working in w4, but haven't tried yet in w5.

It used to be such that a single tile of water was enough to drown you until you hit 40+ Con. You didn't even bother trying to swim without 80+ con. This was worlds ago now though but many of us still retain this fear.

Yeah, I originally got swimming for caves, because there'd be that two tile wide pool that makes you go grab an entire boat. Not even wide enough to use the boat, you just step in the boat and step out! I thus discovered that swimming with ~15 con will drain stamina FAST, and some cave areas were too wet to cross. It's certainly a quick stamina drain (useful for burning hunger?) but it doesn't seem to be the end-all noob skill where learning it means eventual death.

It's not even "eventual death". There's some deaths where someone accidentally turns swimming on and heads out for a lake type idea. Mostly though a noob will try to swim across a river, get to the middle and not have enough con to reach either side. Bam, dead noob due to swimming. Sounds like it was much worse in previous worlds though, some of that fear probably holds.

Note: In case your hand is shacking to much to mouse click the dring button on your water container. You can also use key[2], Just make sure you hit [2] and not [1]. Or your fish food. ;)

So ... Anyone feeling like setting up a little race:
... how far can you swim with a fresh and new character and a (Waterskins(3.0L), Waterflask(2.0L), and/or Kuksas (0.3L).) ... :)
