How do I test Kiln Q

Postby trondaron » Wed Jul 13, 2011 6:25 pm

Well I know Kiln Q = ProductQ*4 - FuelQ - RawProductQ*2.

I put q48 clay and and q104 board into my kiln and received Q50 bricks.

50*4 - 104 - 2*48 = 0

I have a Q0 kiln? WTF?

*edit: side note smithing or sewing softcaps ranger bows?

If you use half the board Q, you get a q52 kiln. (Seems like I recall boards only being 1/2 Q for using as fuel.) Did you get the clay for the kiln from the same place? Try just burning a block or board in the kiln and use branches or charcoal for fuel. If it comes out at the q52, then the boards only count as half.

*was thinking it was archery like the bow, but I could be wrong. I've never attempted making one.

Ok so I did your test, with these results:
Q10 Block burned with a Q54 branch resulted in Q30 Coal, so thats a Q46 Kiln.
I'm in the process of upgrading some things in town so I've been doing some burning. I've always used boards for highQ fuel in kilns when possible.

My other burn of the day (not previously reported) Q49 Raw Planters Pots and Q48 Ball Clays burned with a Q104 board resulted in Q62 products. Which implies a kiln Q of 46 also (really it should be Q49, but the burned products were Q62.75 rounded down I'm guessing).

I don't know what my point is just that the first burn in my OP came out weird. I'm now thinking maybe someone left a Q50+ branch in the kiln and I didn't notice. That would have given Q 50 bricks. I'm relatively certain board Q is *not* halved for use in kilns.

It's psy and marksmanship for ranger bows I believe.

For wooden bows it's just marksmanship.

Could someone confirm this? Because I'm pretty sure it's not true, but I might be wrong.

Well, if he's got his numbers right, it'd have to be less than full Q. That's why I asked him to test it with something else and then post that.

Thanks for reading everything posted so far. He answered the question and posted what the error might have been proving my guess wrong.
