Yep there's still people who play the game. The game world is huge compared to its player base (I imagine that was a very specific design element, in order to make the player feel isolated and at his/her own wits).

I'm new too and I'd recommend just starting out solo until you get a feel for it and learn what and how everything works, game mechanics-wise. Lots of reading to do like the wiki and this forum especially.

Okay, questions:

1) There is a friends list. It is called adding kin. Click on the heart in-game to see it. :3
2) You can attack players, but I assume that will be further in the game for you.
3) There are no NPCs, whatsoever, besides animals. (Beware, they are stronger than they look.)
4) Yes, that is correct. Sleeping takes away travel weariness which allows you to teleport. (Also in the future.)

If you need more info., I play a lot. PM me if you want my HS, and I will PM it back.

Best of luck! :D

1. depends how you organize the village, there are certain village positions called Lawspeaker and Chieftain, however.
2. Yes, Palisade walls and Brickwalls.
3. You are in the same world as everyone else. To find your coords (a) find a large landmark and scour http://algeralith.info/HavenMap/ for it (hard); (b) find another player and ask them :)
4. If you commit certain "crimes", you can be summoned at your hearth fire. I wouldn't worry about such things for now, just work on finding enough food to survive, and building your skills.
5. ok ;)

1. yes
2. yes

seriously though, just try and play the game - you'll figure out all this stuff when you need to :)

3. Put a bed in it, by lifting the bed and then rightclicking on the leanto. Then rightclick on the bed in the leanto and you should be able to select sleep :). Travel weariness is not important for you now, when you are more advanced you can worry about it. I would ignore it for now.

1) There's an infinite amounts of large villages, but most tend to stay away from newer players. I think you should go solo until you have some adequate stats, to get past the learning curve.
2) Villagers can attack each other, in a friendly spar (duel), or a violent fight. This is called (the violent fight) kin slaying, and is, IMO, the worst thing to do. ;_;
3) You need a bed as well as the lean-to. No, it doesn't matter if it's full, just you won't be able to get through crossroads (teleporting, only if you're in a village) until it is drained by sleeping.
