Full absorption when being hit by animal.

Is there a way to make all damage being stopped by armor, or will all animals have partialy AP hits? (at 0% def slider)

Dunno what you mean by AP hits, but animals will always take away some health points on hit.
Part of their damage overrides armor

Does having better armor decrease the amount that is taken off your defense bar when in combat?

No. Armor only prevents damage. Some armors will provide a bonus to your combat skills, though, which translates into a small improvement to your defense.

great what is the point of having a steel plate then if you can get unarmed to 600 and never need to use it. xD
I really need to start investing in my melee skill, only about 15. :P

Well, steel plates can be useful for hearthlings who 'don't' have access to quick UA leveling up, for people who want to add a bit more defense, if they just want to stay, plain, living, or all of the above.

So you don't go down in one shot from a high level ranger bow when you're surrounded? Rumor mill says a person can hit for over 1500 with one with the right skills and quality.

It's not a rumor. Also armor won't protect you from getting hit at 0 defense with a strong enough weapon and/or a high strength character.
Reaper, Reaper, that's what people call me! Why?
Cause they all die! When I sing, I end their lives

Is that a fact? Well, you're a goddamn Philistine!

No shit Sherlock. Read the posts above. Also, defense rating has absolutely nothing to do with ranged attacks.

Nobody said anything about armor protecting you from getting hit. Armor's primary purpose is to MAYBE keep you from dying if you screw up and get defense beat down and take a big hit or maybe to buy you the few seconds needed for friends to assist you in combat. Otherwise, everyone would just run around in Cutthroat Cuirasses.

Because it hasn't been answered, the original question is:

Good enough quality armor gets better in protection. High enough quality will soak any weak attack and most moderate attacks (though likely with armor damage). All animal hits are Armor Piercing (for whoever asked what AP was). No matter how good armor is, damage with AP will always do some damage to your SHP.
