Mine shaft techniques (World 6)

Postby Retanaru » Wed Nov 23, 2011 1:28 am

I'm mining my way through a wall for some much needed ore, and the zig-zag technique is serving me quite well, but I was wondering if there are other more direct paths I could take to the suspected ore site (not an actual mine shaft though). Also, I would like to know the safest way to change the direction of the zig-zag. Thanks for any help.

Drop a mine hole. It's your only other option.

There is no "safe" methods. However, as your doing your snake movement, when you go to turn right, turn left instead and start doing a snake in the new direction. Flip that around if you want to turn right instead of left.

Two pics I took earlier today.

1# rule of mining
In the 3 tiles behind your character + the one you are standing on, a maximum of 3 tiles may have been mined out, more than that and you will get yourself a collapse.

With enough effort you can make roads 5-tile wide without the use of mine supports.

Ah, slipper knows what I'm aiming for, but this brings up a new questions. What do you mean by the 3 tiles behind your character, does simply changing the direction my character is facing change which 3 tiles it is? Is there a pattern for making a 2/3 wide road?

Edit: actually I think I've already figured out a viable pattern, but reassurance would feel better than being squished.

Yes. Everything depends of your positioning.
Remember that it is 3 tiles behind your character PLUS the one you are standing on.

Thank you very much. That's everything I wanted to know. Though now there's a cave in every time I even touch a wall I think I'll just backtrack and go around this spot.

Ok me and 2 friends each tried this mining technique.
When mining down 1 tile wide tunnel at around 10+ tiles down the tunnel we get cave in. I was very certain at the second time that my positioning was good.
