Farming and soil

Postby ninja_yodeler » Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:11 pm

So never having done much farming before now I have a question.

I know that crop q will rise faster as it climbs toward the q of soil it is planted in (at least I'm 99% sure that's the case)
and I know (99% sure) that crop q rises a lot slower above that soil q

But, is it possible for the soil to be so low that it actually caps the crop?

Because on 2 different soil q's (the first q35ish, the second q14ish) my crop has not been able to get above theq60-q58 mark, even though they have been harvested at least 6 -7 times now, and my farming skill is 70 so it is nothing to do with that.

I had q70+ crops on q20 soil in W5. Imported crops of higher q did not lose quality, although we didn't have the really high-q ones long enough to notice much change before the end of the world.

If you're only planting a very small area (I know you've posted something about your farm layout before, but idk how you're working it at the moment) it might just be too small to get enough randomly higher numbers in the results every time. I would pretty much expect q to increase by one point per harvest once I'm above soil q, though.

There is no cap as in putting a complete stop to the growth. As soon as your crop quality hits the soil quality each harvest will provide you with a -3 to +1 change on crop q. Thus making it more likely for the q to drop than to rise. Still you will slowly progress.

Wiki says -5 to +2. I haven't farmed all w5 so this might be true.

It's definitely [-5, +2] after passing the max soil Q for the tile. Even then, it puts crop quality increase at +1 per generation at full nature.

Thanks guys, I'm glad there is no cap it just seemed odd for it not to have risen after so many harvests guess ill just keep going with it then

and yes min I still use the same layout, I've not come across a better one so far :)

What crop are you trying to raise that's being stunted? Yes it can be bad luck but it could also be pumpkins or tea. Those two are much less likely to rise in quality in crops that yield 3 variable seeds.

it's not that carrots rise in quality faster, it's that they have a faster growing time than most and generally get farmed more as they are more useful than things such as say beetroot or tobacco
