Putting a Foot Down

Postby Delagus » Thu Feb 16, 2012 12:10 am

A few days into my first serious community settlement, already I am discovering the joys of having neighbors. Not far from what has become our sizable home homestead, happened upon what look's like a feral hobbo's squat- miscellaneous crops, containers, and tanning gear strewn around a spruce bed with no defenses or claim, several hearthfires nearby but no sign of more than one active character at once (lack of beds and industry), and evidence of (relatively) highskill crafting or a really sloppy talent for wheeling off people's stuff. Also, the site is littered with a handful of skeletons.

Recently I found several of the leantos for lumber outside our claim damaged but not destroyed or raided of supplies. In order to try and facilitate peace, I wrote a little message on some parchment along with a tidy gift of dried meats and furs inside crate at his doorstep, asking if he wanted to cooperate. When I returned, it seemed that he had picked through it, taking only the furs and leaving the parchments with the message and for his reply in the box. With no other active neighbors for several miles, I'm beginning to suspect that this guy is a troll.

My question is this: based on his encampment, what are the chancing that he is a fleshing-eating troll? That is, to you experienced players, how likely is he to have Rage and the ability to kill? And if he does, will pole fences hold this killer back? Or, if he does not, what initial and incremental skills at what level would generally be necessary to put him down?

Thanks,

-Del

Update: I've seen this character once, dressed in bear gear.

Are you sure it's a person and not an animal eating your food?

Wild boars, bears, and even deer will rummage through baskets and crates in search of meat, berries, and honey. A land claim won't stop these insatiable beasts because they can't see pink due to colorblindness. Instead, you have two options to deal with them. One is to hunt all of the animals in your area. This is tedious and won't stop new critters from moving in. The second and more practical option is to tame a deer. Deer are the peacekeepers of the animal kingdom and all the animals know this. Your pet will then patrol your lands, asking the other animals to leave in the common animal language. This would also explain why your letter, written in a human language, was ignored.

serious answer: taking items from baskets, crates, drying racks on unclaimed land is common practice. it's likely that a new player lives in the wilderness and is helping himself to free food =) can you be sure that the player with the bear cape is the same person taking the free food?

If you havent placed a claim, or/and a palisade you deserve to get robbed, i know it might sound harsh but its true.

Either get over the fact that you will lose items or create a claim and wall it.

EDIT - i reread your post (i see you do have a claim) get a palisade up asap.

I actually remember on the first few days of world restart staying online or insuring someone else was online until we had a claim up and had our hides drying on it (as those things are Gold at start of new world.) Same thing with keeping 1 or 2 guys guarding a cave entrance until we had that claimed.

I usually tend to do the stay online until claim up regardless though, or at the very least I pick up any items of value to Me before logging off.

I agree 100%! I'm not complaining or publicly lamenting my circumstances, just asking advice. :) I was expecting to get this, but I wasn't sure exactly what my options were for dealing with it.

Thanks for the insight. Someone else also pointed out that leantos decay by themselves, which may have had something to do with it. Also, I might have been clear- what happened was I sent the "Wildman" a gift basket asking for a reply, with a piece parchment for him to do so, and he just wolfed down the contents and presumably wiped himself in ungodly places with the paper. >_>

It's actually very bizarre that this person continues to expand their holdings without putting any effort into defenses. Or symmetry. I'd post a screenshot of their trailer park lot, but I'm afraid you'll all learn my location and track me down to throw a great big welcome party, and I couldn't possibly live with myself having imposed that kind of an obligation on you such wonderful people.

But, as always and again, thanks for the tips! I'm off to erect a wall.

For the love of God man, I'm not frikken trolling, OP seems to have a sense of humor so I asked for a screenshot. Ease off the caffeine or something.
