Perception * Exploration

Postby Dondy » Wed May 15, 2013 11:44 pm

Does anyone know what is the maximum Perception * Exploration a player should try to get? There has to be a point where eating more carrots and throwing more lp into Exploration stops making the player more successful at foraging. Eventually you're going to see everything that is foragable so you don't need to raise your Per * Explor any higher and can throw the lp into something else.

If you don't know exactly, do you have a ball park figure? 4,000? 10,000? Any guesses?

You can see everything at 6,400 Per*Exp. There's a table at the bottom of this wiki page on foraging- http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Foraging
Check me out on Twitch! I stream many different games and it may seem my channel is inactive but that is because I am now restarting streaming! (Click the image :D)

its wasteful to raise exploration after a while, but perception(weighted against your targets agility) increases your minimum damage with ranged weapons.

6,400 is a good place to stop if you never plan to sniff out crime scents. I'd advise every hermit to get more or at least one member of every village to get more to find and identify criminals. You can roll to see the scents indefinitely but you get more scents per examination if you have a higher total. I have no clue what the formula is for getting scents.

I saw somewhere in the forums that 50 exploration is enough(in order to reduce LP waste), and rest of per*exp should be realised by perception (128 needed)

This. The most I could dig up was:
The criminal's Intelligence*Stealth is weighed against the tracker's Perception*Exploration. The tracker will only be able to see the criminal's scents if he has at least half the criminal's Int*stealth.

As for where to stop, I don't think you should. I gave myself 80 EXP, and just kept grinding carrots/lamb sausage. I have a forager/ranger char dedicated for that though.

At the moment, since I am running a moderately noob character I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting his stats too far out of balance. I want to keep my psyche reasonably close to my per, con, int etc. so it isn't a pain to raise later in the game. For that reason I have pushed foraging skill quite hard. I have 20 per and 53 exp and am gathering cave bulbs and mussels as fast as I can so that I can get psyche up to the level that all my other attributes are at. My question was entirely from the point of view of using per * exp for foraging. Other uses will come much later!

It seems to me that raising my exploration higher than 50 wasn't a waste of lp. My foraging ability is good enough that I can keep myself well stocked with toadstools and thorns and things so the lp is coming in steadily. On the other hand I certainly don't have a well rounded character. I have no black skills yet and am missing lots of quite normal skills like beermaking and decent hunting skills because I am not using those yet.

I'd probably be following a different developmental path if I were playing with an experienced group, but right now I am in a group that is not ready to build a village and don't have any access to metal. I think that having the higher foraging skill is more valuable for me right now.

it really doesn't matter what "path" you're taking, you really should go for hunting early on before you even think of most other things(foraging being that 1 exception). I'll agree with no access to metal beermaking is a waste of points since you can't drink the stuff without a tankard(that really should be changed), but what was meant by 50 exp is that when you have 128 perception(and you'll be a lot higher than that at some point) with 50 expl you can see all foragables and while perception has benefits beyond foraging/tracking exploration doesn't so its better to get more perc than expl since you can spend that lp on other things...since if you had stopped at 50 instead of going to 53 you'd have another 15600 lp to use for other skills.
