Salvage Op!

Postby Whitehyena » Tue Oct 15, 2013 1:08 pm

So, on my main character, Nino, within the first say.... ten minutes I was playing around on her, I found a dusted off little... well..... I don't know what to call it. Looked like someone was going to TRY to build there, loused it up, and then said 'Screw it', and just up and left, leaving a rune saying 'Good luck to founders'. But there are two issues, I suppose, that I've got to deal with. One is due to my ignorance, and the other is moreover a question...

First, the primary issue is that I'm building a palisade wall. Yay! I've already been robbed twice, and the first time, the perpetrator got away with an Itsy Bitsy Spider, three wishbones, two emerald dragon flies, and two toy chariots. (What a butthole. I worked hard for those. And I thought that they would be safe in a coffer inside my house.) Second time he just got a handful of toy chariots, (that I really don't give a crap about because now I keep all my important curios on me at all time), and some chicken meat. Point is, I'm tired of being robbed. So, I'm making palisade. My question is: How do I make a gate? I didn't bother with my roundpole fence because an errant sneeze could knock it over, but I want to be a little more careful with my valuble, and hard to demolish and reconstruct palisade. What do I need? And how will I do it?

Secondly, within this little abandoned plot is a cave, with four hearth fires around it, one of them being in front of the cave entrance. Now, I know from seeing about five on combined all of my characters that this is actually a clever way to make an underground fortress (Be a dwarf! For the Iron Hills!), and so I have no way to get inside the cave. Should I be concerned with it? I've been on this plot for about a week, and I have seen noone going in or out of it, nor any sign of anyone doing so. They even had some barrels set up on some pavement outside (which, I won't lie, I pilfered. But I live in a house maybe a fifteen second walk south of it. I also left a rune for three days asking if they belonged to anyone, and I never got response.... soo....). But I suppose my second question: Is there any way to get rid of these hearthfires? I can't destroy, or move them. And personally, I would hate to finish my little shelter for the stranded, only for some viking-esk raiders to emerge from the cave, be infuriated at the broad daylight they emerged in, and have them burn my village to the ground from the inside out...

Help, plox?

1. A palisade gate, like all gates, require 2 tiles and is built between 2 cornerposts. So, you start you fence with a corner post at the point where you want to put your gate and the most resource economical way is from a corner of your property. (P.S. You have to pave the fence parameter before you can build a palisade or brickwall). The cornerpost has a setting/drying period (I haven't done this in ages but iirc it's 8irl hrs). Then if you right click the cornerpost you will see options to extend in various directions. Now build all the way around and end with a cornerpost that leaves a 2 tile gap to your initial cornerpost. When you now right click on wither of these cornerposts you will have the option to build a gate.

Check wiki for the amount of resources you will require for your fence, particularly the cornerposts and gate so that you can finish your fence in one go when the initial post has set... else, you may very well get griefed.

Another important point, make sure that you have the entire area, +1 tile!, claimed so that, in the case that you get griefed, there are at least scents.

Last important point: When your fence is done, right click every cornerpost and seal them, so that someone can't grief you by just extending from a cornerpost you built.

2. I'm tired of typing now and will let someone else help you with this one.

Is there any way to get rid of these hearthfires?

The only way to remove them is to break them i'm afraid, which will need criminal acts turned on and will leave a vandalism scent.

http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Palisade

If u have a char able to place a claim over the HFs, and with this same char owner of the claim you do the demolishing, it will nor leave any scents.
It takes long if the toon has little STR, you can wear a bear cape, an axe (adds 1 dmg) or pickaxe (adds 2 dmg) and a talisman to help.

You can place a hearth fire in front of your doorway using the shift key, because otherwise the game will not allow you. This HF will prevent in a minimum way players from going inside to steal you valuables.

You can also create an alt to use as storage.

Good luck!. :D

Edit: Cliffs are somewhat tricky to build a wall or palisade and really not leave gaps that can be used to walk through.
You can make and use a roundpole fence to see how they should be built to prevente this gaps.

If the HFs are inside your Pclaim they will not leave any scents, I've cleaned up my base from random hfs and had tracking on to see if I left any scents.
Edit: I think I've been ninja'd

Yeah, sorry Whitehyena, I should have added this ^^ - was going on the premise that as you had to walk to the cave you probably didn't have it covered or that the owner of the hf's had claimed their entrance. :)

So, I've actually got a question. Can two different palisade walls come together to make a gate, or did I just louse it all up?

Gates are a 2x1 structure.

RoB Wiki wrote:Two empty tiles with corner posts on either side make building a gate possible (see notes for extra information). Once a gate has been built, the character laying the final touch on the gate will receive a Key for it.

I feel this line in the wiki should be rewritten to make it immediately understandable:
Gates can only be made when two Cornerposts stand on both sides of two empty paved tiles. The exception is the double-gate bug, see notes.
The player who finishes construction receives the gate's key.

To build your gate, your wall should look similar to this:

O - Cornerpost
x - Wall Segment
= - Gate
- 1 Tile of Paved Ground
. 1 Tile of empty Space

All sides are of equal length in this example. (4x4)

Before wrote:OxxO
x- -x
x- -x
O- -O

After wrote:OxxO
x- -x
x- -x
O = O

Note that to make the gate, you require two tiles of empty space. For palisades and brick walls the tiles must be paved. :[ Bummer you got locked out/in.
