Starving in the wilderness...a fishing pole with no string... foraging skill with nothing to forage...rabbits that run away before i can kill them...how is a homeless supposed to stay alive like this?!?

What Arcanist really meant to say is...

Read the stickies!!

Send your character on a suicide mission to punch a bear and start over.
Or make another character and use the kin password in character create so you spawn near it and try getting food, Its what I did when I first started playing a few weeks ago

With fishing once you finished your rod you need to find a fishing node to catch fish (has fish jumping out the water)
With rabbits make sure you are pretty much standing on them before you attempt to catch them, doesn't always work but it gives you better chances.

watch carefully and you can find taproots - a brand new character can find one as long as it has the skill "foraging" - taproots do not fill you much, but it still helps you a bit and better than starving.
(only for emergency, but someone new actually whined in chat before how we never told him/her that roots were edible.)
rabbits that run away before i can kill them

1) walk right next to one. (left-click the rabbit to get close enough to it) turn your speed to run/sprint (3rd or 4th) and right-click it to catch it. make sure you have big enough slot of 2x2 in your inventory before catching one.
2) if you fail and your rabbit starts running, click the right top icon of crossed swords (next to a rabbit icon) to quit combat mode so it stops running. get close to it again and try again.
3) if you find a fox, check around. it is sometimes after a rabbit, kills one and leave the dead rabbit behind.
4) find grassland, heath or moor. those tiles have a good chance of spawning chicken families.

walk (2nd speed) until you find enough food, to save your stamina.

I will walk. For ten thousand times ten thousand paces I will walk. And If I find no food, I will die like a Man.

Raise your exploration skill to see more things to forage. Taproot, blueberries, and chantrelles can keep you alive until you can hunt and farm, and don't underestimate the delicious bounty you can get from anthills.

left click on rabbit then right click is your best option.
