Strongboxes, how strong are they?

Postby spectacle » Tue Apr 27, 2010 10:53 am

Does anyone know how much strength is needed to break a strongbox? Are they liftable?
In other words, are they potentially useful, or just for decoration?

Building one generates a key required to open the strongbox.

Yeah, I think he knows that. However if they can be destroyed easily, thus spilling their contents, or lifted (and thus carried off) the lock doesn't serve much purpose. I guess them having to slowly carry my stuff off is preferred to them being able to just grab it and run, but it's still not much of an improvement.

I think the main use for these boxes will be community resources which you want to limit access to.You could put one in the center of your village, and use it to store rare resources without the risk of a random village member deciding to take them, because only people with key copies can open them.

AFAIK, strongoboxes are carryable only when empty, much like cupboards.

Cupboards are already the biggest storage space you can get, and one of the easiest to make, to the point that anybody who has a house can fill it with the things. They're the best general purpose, they're easy to make, and can be made en masse. They can't be good at everything though. If you want mobile containers you need to make chests (or now coffers) and if you want security, then you make strongboxes. Sounds like a good setup to me.

While you're at it, make several of them and lock all the extra keys in one of them. It won't exactly stop a siege, but it should slow down thieves (especially the kind that doesn't bother with strength/vandalism).

What'd be fun to do is build a ton of excess chests. Set them all around in big grids of like 8x8, and only put items in a few of them. Then be amused as the raiders sit there lifting and rearranging them, or taking the time to destroy them all, just to try to figure out which have items in them.

One of my villagers asked me yesterday if it was possible to lock the key to your strongbox inside the strongbox. I told him that with our luck, YES.
