Mine questions

aside from density of the area (chances that they've already taken the mines) are there any particular places that yield mines better than others? our village is in the process of prospecting and there are a few caves close by, we are near a river and large moor. is there any particular area we should be looking in?

Seems like more often than not a mountain will have a mine.

seems like it after doing some reading. the nearest mountain... isn't really near at all.

Mountains, caves and i have heard mudflats. Of course the mine could be anywhere so just limiting yourself to those areas is stupid. Remember prospecting has aa 1000tile radius so don't think so much about the terrain you are in (except check caves) and just prospect around. Either gridlike or walk in one direction and hope for the best.

I'v found that mudflats are the best places to search for mines, the only ones ive ever had/seen have been on a mudflat.

No point in concentrating on terrain, prospecting has a big enough range anyway.

Mountains and Mudflats tend to be the best high-density sources.
Caves also have them but are apain and typically not worth bothering with.
They can appear on forest or anywhere else, it's just not as likely it seems. Since prospecting is a whopping 5 minimaps in each direction (is it 1,000 tile radius or diameter?) you really shouldn't have to worry about that.
