Archery vs Melee

Postby delgar89 » Tue Jun 15, 2010 8:04 pm

Hi, im newb here and i have a question for more advanced players:
1) Bow or a Sword? I can assume that Sword fighting is more for PVP and u can hunt with it too, but for that u need metal. Archery seems easier but for bether bows u need good branches and for that good trees, so luck with soil/water and farming on sufficient lvl. The question is then: should i level archery for hunting purposes, or focuse more on gaining LP then go for mine hunt or trade for some metal to get my sword. My aim is mostly a good skill for hunting and some self deffence.
2) When we are on stats can some1 post how roughly stats on ~~endgame (i know there is no endgame) should look ??

3) Me and my fried wanted to start togheder (hearthpassword-system was not known yet for us) and we started in same location: South Russia or smthin. I found a map on forum... any1 can tell me if this city is on map? I would like to go to some other city for trade... that South Russia is kinda deserted i think...

easiest way to hunt is with a sling. its easy to craft and noobfriendly as the ammo is cheap and the aiming is fast
you just have to fence in your aim (like fox, sheep) with buildingsigns, because aiming is interrupted if you are hit

The question was more like:
Should i go Marksmanship skill up to like 100? or Should i stop at 40 and its enough... or maybe at "end game" its useless and with high Melee u dont use bows at all anyway.

oh, i see

most people prefer swords later on, as pvp-enemies wont stop running (either towards or from you). another nice plus is, that you can craft rings with strengh+melee bonus

but there are also some with another opinion:
as long as the target wont be too fast (depends on you mm) you can still aim. a bow ignores the defense used in combat and so the arrow could be just prevented by very strong armor... so you may would be able to onehit your enemy faster with a bow
EDIT: i just forgot: archers need to equip a quiver- this thing uses the same slot as a backpack, so you loose many slots of inventory!

so i think you can choose for one side without having any problems later on
both have their pros and cons

i prefer my rangers bow, stalking my opponent, waiting for that moment where he drops his guard, then i take a very deep breath(long ass time getting aim) and take the shot, and its all over.

but yeah if someone ambushes me in melee im fucked, the trick is to not let that happen.

when im the one hunting i go for the stats, rest of the time i wear armor, nice steel plating and helmet.

problem with archers is that they have to play it smart or die in a horrible way. melee can just go gruk mad!(no pun to your name, i got a char called gruk) and then smash at people and stuff till it dies.

can i see ur stats? how much MM u have? Perception? How long it takes for u to aim? 4-5 sec? 15 ?

And what do u think about "Gank" Party? 1-2 melee up front and archer sniping from behind?

Why the long ass aiming? is there a malus for hearthlings? Or are you talking moving targets?
