A few questions about planting trees

Postby Orpheus » Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:44 am

Sorry, I'm such a noob and I learn little by little.
So, me and a few friends moved to a new area and well... we killed nature. No, really, we killed it. Now I feel bad and wanna help by planting some new trees, but I hear there are conditions that will stunt the growth.

If I get it correctly I should make sure to plant a tree like this, right?

Where green is the tree and red are obstacles.

Now, if the tree manages to grow to say stage 2, and then suddenly someone puts a fence or something near the tree, will the growth be stunted as well? Or does it only matter when you first plant it? Also, will removing the obstacle let the tree continue to grow, or will it have to be chopped down?

Thanks.

I think it's only a 3x3 space. The growth will only be stunted once the tree is ready to grow, if you remove it before then, the tree continues growing. Placing any object whether it be an animal or whatever next to a tree when it's ready to grow will stunt it's growth, if a tree's growth is stunted. It remains at that stage.

Oh? The wiki says 5x5 so I was following that notion. Thanks for the answer.

Can you place trees everywhere?

Wiki info is outdated and wrong. Dev's listed the exact formula used in one of the announcement threads...but I'm too lazy to look it up. Basically, a tree needs 100% of it's own hitbox diameter in every direction when it tries to grow. If anything else with a hitbox is in that space, it will become stunted. So the space needed will vary depending on the kind of tree and the phase of growth...the bigger it is, the more space it needs.
I've been using an over-2 up-3 pattern for my orchard and it has worked very well. You can plant in either deciduous or broadleaf jungle tiles, or on grass/heath/other grassy varients. However trees only grow "quickly" in their native terrain type, and grow extremely slowly anywhere else.
As trees are growing they will randomly "terraform" tiles around them into their native jungle type; this effect can be most easily observed when you plant in a grass field, and see the tiles gradually reverting back to jungle. You can use this to slowly make yourself a patch of alternative soil types, so you can grow both trees inside your orchard.

The problem is, and the thing which causes the confusion, is the strange (in my opinion) choice to use pixels rather than spaces. The tree does not need a space in each direction, it needs however many tiles it is wide. I'm still not sure why the devs keep making things measure in pixels. It's not an easy task for us to figure out how much space is required, and it makes it even worse when you can't center the tree in the middle of a tile. Since it can be somewhat difficult to measure in pixels in game, 5 tiles is what is usually given to be safe. I don't have the luxury of that much space, so I plant my firs in 3x3 boxes, and they seem to grow fine in them.

They will grow, just much slower. Firs and Pines grow fastest on evergreen forest. Oaks, Elms, and willows grow best on broadleaf. Spruce, Birch, Chestnut, mulberry, and Apple all seem to grow equally well on broadleaf or grassland.

I actually have no idea what you're talking about. :)

I think I've been quite consequent in having reported how trees work: They need an area around them thrice as large (measured by length, not by area) as their own base area (the area from which they occlude other objects) each time they grow one step.
