Starting Out

Postby Kokaiin » Tue Jul 06, 2010 5:34 am

I read the beginner's how-to, but I'm a little confused. I picked Foraging as my first skill, and I'm working on getting some more LP. But, how do I find all the herbs and mushrooms that I'm supposed to find? And, should I get Will to Power, Hunting, and Archery before or after Plant Lore and Farming?

Also, how can I get spindly taproot, or whatever it's called, for string to make a bow?

Early on, before you invest points into exploration, it will be a little tricky to find herbs. They're around, on the ground, but are few and far between yet at that stage. I'd suggest exploring a bit, picking what you do find, and working on gaining LP through other methods too, until you can get lumberjacking. Cutting down trees is good LP early on, and will quickly bump you up to having most of the early stuff you need. Just try to find a spot you'd like to settle in temporarily and cut down the trees you need to clear/build it. Don't go nuts chopping down every tree in the forest.

I've found a little niche cutting down trees, and turning the wood into clogs. I can get maybe, 100+ LP a tree, I haven't really kept count. This is fine, but is there anything else I can do with this wood besides split it, and use it to make the limited amount of furniture I can make? Any skills I could add?

Make cups instead of clogs.

Oh wow, didn't notice that those only took one block.

And should I invest some points into unarmed combat? I've ran into a boar before and was immediately flat on the ground, so I want to make sure I can at least take a hit and run away while I'm exploring.

Raise your Con stat to increase your HP, and craft some leather armour when you can. I don't think unarmed equates to unarmoured in this case.

It looks like the only thing I can make in the way of armor is a leather shield though, unless that's what you meant.

In my experience as a newbie, boars are belligerent, unstoppable hellbeasts that will chase you for miles through the deepest forests and even across mountains for the sole delight of flattening you in a single strike and sitting on your head. Hope that helps!

Another question. I understand I need a foundation to make a cabin by laying stone, but for some reason, I can't lay stone in what I'm guessing is forest terrain. I can, however, do it on this reddish terrain which I guess is desert. Anybody know why?
