Getting started Farming

Postby riftersupreme » Sun Jul 11, 2010 7:33 pm

Hi!

I'm just about to lay down a claim and start a permanent home. I've planted my one carrot seed (missed the flowering time twice so I couldnt grab more seeds  ) but I've noticed the quality going down on the carrot each time. From what I could gather from the wiki this is due to bad soil at my little forest camp and my low farming skill. Is there a minimum skill that you would recommend having before putting seeds in the ground? Any tips on raising crop quality? Also, is there an easier way to grab the seeds other than timing the growth stages or hoping to find them on the ground?

Thanks in advance

You can plant carrots as well as carrot seeds. As for raising quality, long story short you can raise it up to your farming skill, soil quality has no effect, and you should select best seeds for replanting.

So multi-generation seeds are based solely on your farming skill? Good to know.

The Wiki is also vague on growing times. Is there a table somewhere listing growing times (with stages) of the various crops, that damn flowering carrot is harder to get than a rabbit.

Seeds can change quality +/-5 in one generation. Also, I really don't understand why you'd want carrot seeds, when you can plant grown carrots. OK, I guess you might raise the quality a tiny bit faster, but carrots grow damn fast already and you won't be getting any usable crop if you harvest them in the flowering stage.

*edit*
Wait, I think I know what's the problem. You probably think that only seeds can gain quality, but in fact it works exactly the same for grown carrots. If your crop quality is consistently dropping, it's probably higher than your farming skill. That is, if you get better crops than your skill, they'll drop to your skill in a couple of generations.

Sorry for being vague. At the moment I have one carrot grown from a Wild Seed I had found. I'm trying to get more seeds (which from what I've read give 1-3 depending on your nature slider) ; usable crops arn't the goal yet but rather expanding my crop from that one plant to something that can support me.

Pick your carrots at their final stage. That way, you can eat some if you need food and plant the rest. Having a big farm is tedious if you're by yourself since all the plowing, harvest, and replanting takes a lot of time and stamina.

Also, if you intend to be a farmer and don't mind not doing so hot with mining and smithing, move your nature/industry slider towards nature. At full nature, you get 3 seeds/crop per plant.

You can plant fully grown carrots the same way you can carrot seeds, so no point in picking them when they are flowering for seeds alone unless you are playing for hours on end anyway. Just stick a fully grown carrot back in the ground and it will grow into more carrots.

Gonna be blunt here, but you get the same amount of carrots as you would get seeds, so there's pretty much NO difference aside from grabbing the seeds earlier than the carrots, and being able to stick seeds into seedbags, since carrots don't fit in there.

I was under the assumption that plants always gave one carrot, that certainly makes it easier. Thanks for all the help everyone.
