Battering Rams, how do I use them?

Postby TeckXKnight » Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:43 am

Alright, this is probably a simple question that everyone and anyone can answer but me but how in the heck do you use a battering ram?
I've got two rams built, both are fully repaired and glue fully dried next to a palisade wall I want to knock over -- but I can't use them. The only option I have is to move them.

So how do I attack with them? Is it a special button in the adventuring or combat menu? Do I just start destroying the item with the battering ram nearby and it'll pitch in? How?

Move them to wall you want to crush. Then you will get "Use" option.

I've never used a battering ram myself, but since someone else posted this topic I think I will take the opportunity to ask a question I've had for a long time. The sprite shows the ram only one direction, but you can knock down walls that run north-south or east-west, correct? Even if the ram doesn't look like it lines up with swinging towards the correct wall?

That would be odd since its 'use' does not have a directional notation. Does that mean you would break multiple directions simultaneously? Or would it choose one at random?

Also, does it really take your weapons damage into account? Therefore wouldn't a bow be useful to have equipped when using a ram as it has a higher damage than other items?

All the ram does is uses the destroy ability from the adventure menu, but with 20 extra damage derived from the ram, and with the ability to work together with up to three other hearthlings. The only items that effect destroy damage are the stone axe (+1 damage) and the pick axe (+3 damage). The ram has a different graphic for each direction, and can attack any wall so long as there's a two tile wide area adjacent to it for the ram to fit into.

Ahh, so the wiki is wrong entirely then. Thank you for clearing that up.

How much strength is required while using a ram to knock down a palisade?

To get the required strength simply multiply the damage. Soak of palisade = 30, ram = 20 damage, you need to do at least 10 thus to overcome the soak. 10x10 = 100. 100 strength is required to match the soak, and thus 121 (11x11) to do damage past that. How much it will take to damage it in a reasonable timeframe however depends on your definition of reasonable. I'd suggest having 200+ strength if you intend to do it alone. With 320 it takes me about a stamina bar and a quarter to drop an undamaged section of palisade with a ram.

Destroy damage is str^2. It doesn't make sense that a held weapon will make your battering ram do more damage, so I would personally doubt that unless someone can absolutely confirm.

Also, it would be nice if somebody could actually determine stone axe and pickaxe damage; I've known it as +1/+2 respectively.
