It reduces server load for areas not being used to not stay open forever. We don't need the server rubber-banding us on the river because you wanted to leave leather on your floor for half an hour.

Generally it takes 15 minutes to unload a map from what I've noticed but it's entirely possible this is variable.

Leaving things on the ground anywhere is like saying you don't want them.

Only way things will stay on the ground with you is if an active player is nearby. Houses, caves, mines, outside, etc are all their own little world so if you went inside, you were effectively leaving the outside map and the game detected no players and decided to clean it up. Yeah, you probably got boned on the reset since I don't think I've ever seen it happen after 20 seconds. Tough break.
