First of all, get a steady source of food - foraging is a good start, but you should find some variety as soon as possible - start hunting, farming or fishing.
I would not advise to settle down and claim land as soon as you can - wander around a bit with a semi-permanent camp you wouldn't mind abandoning, see what the game allows you to do and try picking what you want to be doing. Once you have an idea, find a place with the appropriate resources: clay if you like pottery, soil and water if you want to grow trees, fish, sand - whatever you like. It doesn't need to be a particularly high-quality source, either: as long as it'll take you time to reach that level, you're fine.
From there on, just expand, experiment with new skill, find other interesting spots around you, make friends with your neighbours if you have any - try finding a balance between having nothing to do (And being bored) and having too much jobs in the game (And being bored).

Thanks loads for the help. I'm still having boar/bear problems, whenever I go out they just aggro on to me and there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. I have just made a well though so hopefully I can get some stamina to get away from them this time, and find some leeches to cure my HHP which is around 35 at the moment. How is that plan?

You can avoid wildlife by leaving the area (Logging off works, too) for around a half an hour. When you come back, they'll have de-spawned (Although a new one may spawn in).
If they come too often, you might want to move around a bit and look for a safer place. It mainly depends on how "civilised" the area is - claims and villages seem to affect it most, but I've noticed that simply moving a couple minimaps away from a spot tends to have different spawns. Or maybe it's just my luck.

As for the leeches, make sure your SHP is full and you have plenty of food before attaching any to yourself.

Actually, only claims affect the spawns. No wildlife spawns inside personal claims. Villages only affect the level of the spawned creatures nearby. I can only find level 3 boars, bears and foxes around my village, I have to go further away to get higher level ones. They do spawn on village claims though.

Kind of unrelated, but okay. Left click an item that can hold water (bucket, waterflask, waterskin) so that it sticks to your mouse cursor and then rightclick the well. When the well animation is finished it should be full of water.

Right click the item that's holding the water. You can't drink out of a bucket though, we're no animals. Use a waterflaskskin or a kuksa.

Awesome, ok. Will find a kuksa. I was trying to use a wooden cup!

Yeah, that's a Symbel item. Maybe you can drink out of it in the future. Some day. Game's still alpha for a reason.
