Actually grassing was a good idea in that case but not for the speed of growth. Trees naturally change the terrain around them to their native one but broad leaf and coniferous forest unfortunately look the same. Grassing before trying to convert to the other kind of terrain is a smart move since it will show you the spots that got converted and you can place your second generation trees right on the converted part.

Isnt it much easier just to look at minimap? Those forests have great difference in colors.

Good luck telling which tile is which when it's a sprinkle of single deciduous tiles on coniferous tiles.

Is it just a binary "native-non native" switch for trees, or is there some sort of ladder for each tree for which territories it grows faster in?

Speed is probably the largest factor, so are birch and fir the same growth rate? I'm probably gonna go with birch since my main camp is in broadleaf, but there a coniferous forest just south of where I am.

I wouldn't set up a tree farm away from your main camp, unless you want to set up a crossroads and palisade as well. Having to walk any distance to a tree farm is a pain in the ass.

The tree will increase it's overall quality every time it advances a stage, this is marked by a change in appearance. While you can chop them down early you won't receive as many resources such as branches, logs, etc, and they will be lower quality.
