Actually grassing was a good idea in that case but not for the speed of growth. Trees naturally change the terrain around them to their native one but broad leaf and coniferous forest unfortunately look the same. Grassing before trying to convert to the other kind of terrain is a smart move since it will show you the spots that got converted and you can place your second generation trees right on the converted part.
