I do 4x4 fields so that the seeds harvested from one field fits exactly in a large chest. Easy. :D

my "field" consists of 2 plots

6x6 and a 3x6

6x6 is grown and harvested and stored (if veggie)
3x6 is harvested and sorted then used to replant both 6x6 and 3x6. (teas and pumpkins are a little different...)

Only need total of 8 (6 sort, 2 to put best seed in) per field. build multiple fields and keep a database of each field's quality.

For veggie fields, use a wagon to sort... best storage, mobile, and reduces need to build containers at each field (unless you have a storage system that works with the chef)

I normally have in my wagon
-LC of seedbags (harvesting non veg fields require a lot of seed bags and place to temp. store)
-Straw basket of all tools (metal saw, hammer, scythe, pickaxe, 2 t.bags, all the essentials.)
-Plow
-Couple Chests for misc. purposes
-Loom
-Rope (cuz bulls love to run away)
-Stone Grinder

I use a wagon since i have to manage 20+ of such fields =P
