Just build your settlement a few tiles away from rivers then to counter it. And yes, the drying phase of rams sucks. Originally it removed raids from the game/made advanced raiders invulnerable. Nowadays people just use brickbreakers.

Well obviously, but what would that accomplish besides being a pain in the ass to some established cities? I guess the initial scramble to safety would be very fun to watch and provide plenty of opportunities for griefers, but once it's over, then what? Why not have all settlements threatened equally instead?
Just make rams liftable with a decay hit. Or simply un-nerf them.

Yeah. I'm okay with sacrificing realism to keep rams nerfed if it makes the game more playable for most people, but if raiders are just going to work around it while breaking realism even further, it's pointless.

Regarding the first question I asked, I discovered first hand that when you right click an animal and click 'leash' you leave a theft scent.
