Oh, and stealing a chest of wrought iron from a claim is a bad idea, no matter how tempting...

I'm a newbie too and what I find most rewarding is making buckets. To get the most out of it you should rise carpentry and survival - to 10, unless you have access to higher QL wood, then go higher. You must get 10 QL bone saw asap. You should also move martial / peaceful slider 5 times to the right. This will also move tradition / change slider towards change which at the end will yeld 360% LP bonus. With all these things you will gain ~150 LPs for chopping a tree down, then ~70 for making boards and ~100 for each bucket. Sounds good enough? =D

You ca. Get 620 from one log if you do what krawco said. It's reay easy to get lp fast and you can then start getting other skills to help you out un the future.

I don't know why people are always so keen on making buckets. I'd rather make wicker breadbaskets. Let's do the math.

A bucket takes one board. A wicker breadbasket takes 5 branches or one block of wood (split into 5 branches).

One log can either get you 4 boards or 12 logs (It could give you 6 boards with a metal saw but if you have access to metal goods you should get a scythe and do farming instead of humiliating trees anyway).
Using Q10 tools, making boards gives you 72 LP and making blocks grants 36 LP.
One bucket gets you 108 LP while a wicker breadbasket awards you 72 LP.

So from one log you could either get 72 + 4*108 = 504 LP (72 + 6*108 = 720 with a metal saw) by making buckets or 36 + (12*72) = 900 LP by making wicker breadbaskets.

Or am I overlooking something here?

Wicker breadbaskets are much slower to build and you can easily run out of stamina to make them after 2 or 3 inventories of blocks.

I think most people prefer making buckets because it's faster and doesn't waste that much stamina.

Nice idea DigDog. However, I'll stick with buckets coz I managed to make a 30QL saw which yelds me 17QL boads that make 140LP buckets =D
Too bad I haven't figured basket grind out earlier =/ Bucket grind was a pain on the beggining =p

Good point, I guess it matters if you're aiming for speed or efficency (as in using as little trees as possible). Quality of the saw also matters since you get 184 LP when using Q30 boards, for example. I'd prefer buckets then, too.

I hope that's a metal saw, otherwise baskets still give more LP.
