Aye, it can make a huge difference. The amount of hives might not change how much wax you get, but it changes when you will get it. Let's have an example:

Quite bad. It will take multiple harvests and replants of the crops to even get one wax from one of the hives. Sure, after the critical mass is reached all of your hives will have wax at the same time, but until that happens you won't have wax, plus you wasted materials by building so many of them.

Way better. One harvest and replanting of the crops around this baby gives you around 5 wax maybe one day (or even less) after you planted and of course every time you replant. Not to mention it will be filled with honey to the brim.
