Yup; my random thefts ended up getting me killed. You'd probably want to hide yourself behind a palisade at the very least if you want some security. But with the new mines added, you have a pretty good chance of finding at least tin or copper (since some people don't bother with those), so the long journey for finding your own mine is more worthwhile now on its own without risking yourself with stuff like theft (as long as you're heading to the edges of the world).

Don't give up. I went prospecting for about 12 hours, and at the end I went from being a hopeless loner with nothing to his name to running a nice settlement with 3 other people and owning an iron mine.
