Besides, most people who are starting out don't really have much trade access to the good stuff.

I actually don't really have a strategy. I just jump with death or glory, get 6 IP, use combat meditition, use flex to charge, punch, flex, punch, flex, punch etc. etc.

But you're right. It can be hard for a newbie who doesn't really know how to combat system works.

yeah, once you have decent armor, UA is awesome.
W3 - Apolion, Terricieil (old & new), Westedge & Saltmummys other place.
W4 - Quahog
W5 - Yggdrasil (now gone) - New Yggdrasil.

apple trees seem to be plentiful so feeding your self early game should be hard

as far as rabbit and chickens are concerned get unarmed combat, stand only one tile away then use punch.

for fishing, you will need a pole, string, hook, and bait or lure. string can be found for the foraging skill, you will notice a gather-able plant on the ground, i forget its name, consult the wiki for foraging and look at the first plant on the list.

hooks will need to be made from bone

string isn't crafted at all, rather string refers to various plant fibers, so to reiterate there is no in game object called "string", the above mentioned foraging skill, once obtained and plant is gathered, you click on the plant in inventory then left click the pole.

fishing is also a very slow way to gain xp, though you can semi afk and do it

here is a quick list of things to do to gain a ton of LP which are all much faster than fishing

1. get necessary skills for stone laying and pave a fair square of land
2. build a cabin on said land (you may want wheel making a cart helps a lot with this) (make sure not to clear cut forests, and not cut in peoples back yard)
3. start a farm, if you PM me your hearth secret (on the forum) I can arrange to give you a few seed.
4. don't forget to set your personal belief slider, consult the wiki, this will allow more lp gain per action.

don't encourage people to do that, that invites them to die and people to get frustrated, if your that desperate for food, find an apple tree

+1!
Problem is I only found two after literal hours of wandering in all directions of my current hole. The whole area seems deserted and I wasn't able to find it on ze global map thread. So far I only found one village, it was called Whiskey Peak or something :B
Any hints on how to get to more civilized areas without even knowing which direction is north? xD

no, you can look at an area, downed trees, dead animals, lack of fruit, bark, bough, or other resources is a pretty good indication people are living near by
