Yeah, don't bother in the old world, especially not near the center. You might get lucky, but you probably won't. So far I've found two copper mines somewhere along the west edge of the new world and my friend found two copper, two tin, and one iron. It seems someone's taken the iron before we could setup, though.
In the old world, I searched from a bit west of the center to the south edge and then back to the equator for around 24 hours with no luck. You might find an abandoned mine or something, but your best bet is to head for the new world. Your first step is to find out where you are/which edge you're closest to (after you can see rustroot, of course).

Recently I found copper, tin and iron in the new central most north grid and couldn't find it over 5 caves, you need to just keep lookin, but it's always possible to find mines, just more likely in the edges of the world, and especially in caves.

I gave up looking for mines when I couldn't find out where I was in the world. Is there any tool I could use?

Yes, that is the most accurate representation, but when someone can't see any villages nearby or any landmark that can lead to you, it's kinda hard.

A related question about mining/prospecting.

Does the prospect skill detect mineholes? And its a 1000 tile radius right? Meaning we should travel 2000 away if your first prospect shows "no minerals"?

I'm feeling owned... 4000 and still no minerals. :(

Get ready to get owned frequently... as many said, mining in the Old World (Pre-2011 Supergrids) is incredibly hard, since most if not all mines are taken. I wasted 9 rustroots trying to find mines in the Old World, in vain.

It is actually a 500-tile radius, in every cardinal direction, in a circle-like fashion.

Dang fail wiki...

So I'm guessing prospect can't detect already made mineholes then?

Yes, it can, but only those with metal ores, and not in a village/personal claim.

What kind of mine doesn't have metal ores?

(I hope there's no negative effect of prospecting in a boat..)
